Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist
A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist is someone who administers anesthesia to patients. CRNA’s do anesthesia of all types including general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, and spinal, epidural anesthesia, and obstetric anesthesia. They manage anesthetized patients who have various co-morbid diseases. They administer administer anesthesia through intubation, arterial line placement, central line and Swan-Ganz catheter placement, spinal anesthesia, and epidural catheter placement. CRNA’s work in hospital operating rooms, labor and delivery wards, and anywhere there is a need for anesthesia services.

The employment prospects for CRNAs is excellent. And, currently, there is a shortage of CRNA that is exacerbated by in that they are retiring at a higher rate than nursing school programs are producing them. Educational Requirements
Successful completion of a CRNA program (24-36 months). Prior to admission into a CRNA program, applicants should have already completed the following: BSN or other appropriate baccalaureate degree, hold a current RN license, and have one year’s experience in critical care nursing.
